Vare Consulting

The people behind Vare Consulting

A small practice, deliberately. We work from Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban with owner-managed firms of 15 to 80 staff, and the same two or three advisors stay on an engagement from the first diagnostic through to the handover.

How the practice took shape

Vare Consulting did not start with a business plan. It started with a recurring complaint from owner-managers in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban: the paperwork was technically there, but nobody could find it when a bank or auditor asked. What follows is the sequence of decisions that turned that complaint into a working method.

  1. First engagements

    Two-week diagnostics, nothing more

Early work was deliberately narrow. Two weeks inside a light manufacturing or logistics firm, mapping how supplier contracts, personnel files, and delivery notes actually moved between desks. The output was a written picture of where records split into two versions, not a proposal to fix everything at once.

  2. The retainer decision

Sitting in on the ops meeting

Clients kept asking who would keep the new routines alive. So the model shifted: a retained role where we attend the monthly operations meeting, watch the spreadsheet sprawl return, and correct it in the room rather than six months later. It is slower and less tidy than a project handover, but it holds.

  3. Training a successor

Writing it down for the junior staffer

Every engagement now ends with a named person inside the business who owns the procedure. We write the steps at the level a junior administrator can follow, test them for a full reporting cycle, and only then step back. If the procedure needs us to run it, it is not finished.

  4. Where we stop

    Groundwork, not sign-off

We do not perform audits or statutory sign-off. The POPIA-aligned records handling, health and safety file upkeep, and monthly reporting packs we prepare are handed to your accountant in a state they can work with. That boundary has stayed fixed since the first engagement, and it is the reason accountants keep referring clients to us.

Most of the firms we work with sit between 15 and 80 staff, in light manufacturing, logistics, and professional services. The pattern of decisions above was shaped by them, not by us.

A small practice, deliberately

Vare Consulting is not a firm that scales by adding juniors to a slide deck. We are a handful of people who sit in ops meetings, open the filing cabinet, and read the supplier contract that nobody has looked at since it was signed.

We work with owner-managed businesses across Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, mostly in light manufacturing, logistics, and professional services with 15 to 80 staff. The work is unglamorous: process mapping, contract review, POPIA-aligned records handling, health and safety file upkeep, and the monthly reporting packs that banks and auditors keep asking for. We do not sign off audits or give statutory opinions. We prepare the groundwork so your accountant can.

Vare Consulting team

Who we are

An independent advisory practice, not part of an accounting network. That independence matters when we tell you a process is broken or a contract clause is working against you.

Who we work with

Owner-managed firms where the founder still knows every supplier by name. We start with a two-week diagnostic, then move into a retained role if the fit is right.

How we talk

Plainly. If your filing cabinet and your Google Drive are telling two different stories, we will say so in the first meeting rather than the fifth.
